WHAT SERVICES bSAS PROVIDES WHAT bSAS NEEDS
What Services bSAS Provides
- bSAS annually serves 23,000 people in treatment; on a weekly basis 7,200 individuals are active in treatment
- To serve this population, bSAS oversees a network of 40 providers operating in 70 locations
- bSAS services include prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery programs delivered in outpatient, residential, and medically assisted treatment
- bSAS carefully monitors these services, with monthly on-site visits and quarterly DrugStat meetings
What bSAS Needs
- Baltimore City is experiencing a substantial unmet need for drug treatment
- Between 2003 and 2007, funding for drug treatment fell by approximately $10 million
- Persons seeking treatment are often turned away for lack of treatment slots or services; each day bSAS receives more calls for help than its present capacity
- To meet this demand and to reduce the costly health, crime and social problems addiction causes, bSAS has developed a $15 million strategic plan to expand treatment
- Much of this $15 million in additional funding could have come from the $1 increase in the tobacco tax proposed in the last legislative session; such an increase needs to be reconsidered by the legislature at its next session
- An additional $15 million would enable bSAS to serve 7,500 more people annually, which would be used to increase enrollment of patients in methadone treatment and add to the number of halfway house treatment slots
The Results of Investing in Drug Treatment
- A major study conducted in California found that for every dollar spent on substance abuse treatment, society benefited by $7 in reduced crime, health care, lost income, and welfare costs.
